This document is for HP printers connected to Windows computers.

After connecting the USB cable while installing the printer software, one of the following issues occurs:

  • one 'Unable to complete device setup'oh'unknown deviceThis message appears on the computer.

  • Plug and Play installation does not start.

  • FinishXAppears in the lower right corner of the computer screen.

There are many possible causes for USB installation problems.

  • Malware, viruses, and certain browser plug-ins/toolbars may interfere with software installation. Make sure your computer is virus protected, up to date, and free of viruses and malware.

  • There might be a problem with the USB connection between the printer and the computer.

  • The HP Full Feature software prompts you to connect the USB cable at certain times during installation. If you connect the cable before you are prompted, you may get an error.

  • Windows might try to automatically detect and install your printer when you connect the USB cable to the printer and computerDrivers built into the operating system.If the driver built into the operating system is not suitable for your printer, an error may occur.

Step 1: Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable

To restore the connection between the printer and computer, disconnect and reconnect the USB cable.

  1. Unplug the USB cable from the back of the printer.

Step 2: Test the USB connection

To test the USB connection, connect the USB cable to a USB port on your computer or use another port.

    1. Move the USB cable to another available USB port. For example, if the USB cable is plugged into the front of the computer, move it to a port on the back of the computer.

    2. Restart the computer and printer.

      If the installation completes after connecting the USB cable directly to the computer, there may be a problem with the hub or port. Either connect the USB cable directly to the computer or contact the manufacturer of the hub or dock to resolve the issue.

Step 3: Try another USB cable

Sometimes USB cables can malfunction. Try connecting with a different USB cable.

  1. Replace the USB cable. HP supports USB cables shorter than 3 meters (9 feet 10 inches).

  2. Try installing again.

Step 4: Remove any other USB devices connected to the computer

If you have multiple devices connected to USB, such as another printer, your computer's USB port may not have enough power to detect all of the devices.

  1. Disconnect all USB devices from the computer except the keyboard, mouse, and printer.

  2. Try installing again.

    If removing other devices resolves the issue, HP recommends installing a powered hub to connect multiple USB devices.

Step 5: Reset the printer

Resetting the printer resets all USB connections between the printer and the computer.

Step 7: Uninstall the HP driver and software application

Some HP software applications and drivers might be partially installed on your computer. Remove all HP software from your computer.

Step 9: Disable programs running in the background

Occasionally, a TSR prevents the printer software from loading, preventing the software from installing correctly. You can use the MSCONFIG utility to prevent TSR programs and services from starting.
