Check for additions and updates to these release notes.

VMware App Volumes is a real-time application delivery system that enables organizations to dynamically deploy and manage applications.

The VMware App Volumes 4 Version 2212 Release Notes lists new features, fixed issues, and known issues in this release.

What's new

  • Horizon 8 version 2212 along with App Volumes 4, version 2212 introduces Horizon Published Apps on Demand.

With this new feature, administrators can use App Volumes applications directly in their RDS instant-clone farms. Applications can now be dynamically delivered to a generic Windows operating system when users start them. This dynamic application delivery greatly simplifies still image management and gives administrators the ability to scale down their specific application farms. This feature also bridges the Horizon and App Volumes management consoles, allowing Horizon administrators to add App Volumes Manager servers and authorize users to applications without having to duplicate rights on App Volumes.

This feature provides the ability to reduce time-consuming management of application installations in RDS farms and enables scenarios where, for example, multiple users can use different versions of the same application while connected to the same RDS server.

  • When multiple users log in and use application packages, the hard drives remain connected until the last user using the package logs out.

  • On multi-session operating systems, more than one package for an application can be deployed on a single Windows computer.

Support for deploying more than one package to a single Windows computer depends on the application. EITHERRDS-PaketanhangThis option allows administrators to specify which apps should or should not have multiple packages of the same app deployed.

  • In the Edit Package window in the App Volumes Manager administration interface, theCommentsThe field can now be updated.

  • Sign-in performance improvements through on-demand delivery with many apps.

Problems solved

The number behind each resolved issue is related to the issue recorded in VMware's internal issue tracking system.

  • Link data is not captured in the metadata.json file for links with a path length greater than 260 characters. Therefore, the application shortcut is not displayed when the application is deployed on demand. [3038371]

  • Certain applications with many icons related to file type associations may increase logon time due to the time it takes to transfer the icon content to the virtual machine. [2989141]

Workaround:Disable the File Type Association (CaptureFTA) feature on the computer used to package these applications. For more information on the CaptureFTA parameter, see theParameters to configure svservicesection inAdministration Guide for VMware App Volumes 4, Version 2206.

  • When the Box Drive app is assigned to a computer and a user logs into that computer, the app fails to launch when using the shortcut and displays the following error:This action is not allowed for the "Cashier" application. Contact your administrator. [3002403]

  • File Explorer is slow when processing files in folders that contain a large number of files. [3029679]

  • At the end of an in-app Chrome update, the user is prompted to restart Chrome to complete the update process. A native installation will exit the current version of Chrome and immediately open the latest version. However, for App Volumes, after exiting the current version of Chrome, the latest version of Chrome opens after a delay of several minutes and no activity is seen on the user's computer until then. [3038483]

  • On Windows 11 setups that contain a UIA+ profile writable volume, printers deleted via the Windows GUI may reappear in subsequent sessions. [3029793]

  • ArcGIS and related applications such as ArcMap are slow in the presence of App Volumes, even with ArcGIS installed natively. [3036343]

  • Some 32-bit registry operations fail when packaging App Volumes. Therefore, when the following custom PowerShell script is run on a 64-bit virtual machine with the 32-bit version of Office 365 installed natively, the second command does not display the expected operating system information. [3050432]

    $msoExcel = Nuevo-Objeto -ComObject Excel.Application $msoExcel | Select-Object -Property Betriebssystem

In versions prior to App Volumes 4 version 2212, to get the correct output, an App Volumes Packaging Optimization registry key, optimization levelshould be disabled by setting the registry value to 0 (registry addHKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\svdriver\Parameters /v Nivel de optimización /t REG_DWORD /d) and before packaging the operating system must be restarted. Note that optimization is enabled by default (the registry value is 1).

Known issues

The number after each known issue refers to the issue logged in VMware's internal issue tracking system.

  • Apps packaged with Windows 11 appear as packaged with Windows 10 in App Volumes Manager. [2841689]

  • The App Volumes Manager installation fails with the following error:App Volumes Manager cannot be installed with a regional language (control panel setting) other than Englishif the language setting on the virtual machine is Arabic. [2884143]

Workaround:Change the language to English and install App Volumes Manager.

  • If an app package's VMDK contains a "[" bracket, the package will not be imported into App Volumes. As a result, the package will not appear in the list ofInventApp Volumes Manager Administrator User Interface Guide. [3034059]

alternate solution: Rename the VMDK and import the package again.

  • An operating system endpoint from a blacklisted native folder to a non-virtualized folder (eg.%APPLICATION DATA%in configurations that do not use a UIA+ profile write volume or a profile write only volume) does not work correctly. Files written to the merge source do not appear in the merge destination. [3006443]

  • In a multi-session environment, the error associated with the Microsoft Office application is also visible to users who are not assigned to this suite of applications. Although the application does not behave as expected for users assigned to this package, the error does not affect users not assigned to this package. [3072078]

  • Applications cannot write large string values (several hundred thousand characters) to the registry. [3034063]

  • When a writable volume and FSLogix Office Container are deployed together in a VDI, the FSLogix Office Container VHD is not created on an SMB file share. This issue only occurs when the cloud caching feature is enabled. [2791414]

Workaround:Disable the FSLogix Office Container cloud caching feature.

  • Apps packaged with App Volumes versions earlier than 2.18.2 sometimes have too many redundant firewall rules. These rules can affect the end user's logon time on the agent machines where the application package is deployed. This issue has been fixed in App Volumes 2.18.2 and later. [2624048]

Workaround:If you are migrating an app package created in a version of App Volumes earlier than 2.18.2 and experience this issue, repackage the app after migrating to the target version.

  • If a remote printer is defined on a UIA+Writable Profile volume and the printer is connected to your print server via a USB interface, the printer definition on the writable volume can be removed at the next non-persistent login. [2845852]

    Workaround:

Add the following two scripts to the system volume%SVAgent%\Config\Custom\uia_plus_profile:

OnPreLoadApp.bat: sc config spooler start= net stop spooler desactivado OnPostEnableApp.bat: sc config spooler start= net start spooler automático

If you already have the same script names on the writable volume, add the spooler commands to the scripts.

When a script exists on both a writable volume and the system volume%SVAgent%\Config\Custom\uia_plus_profile, the App Volumes agent runs the script on the write volume and ignores the script on the system volume. To ensure that the App Volumes agent runs both scripts, you can add the following to the script on the write volume:

    cai vorhanden "%SVAgent%\Config\Custom\uia_plus_profile\%~nx0"("%SVAgent%\Config\Custom\uia_plus_profile\%~nx0")
  • Moving or copying a writable volume may fail when performing bulk operations on many volumes. [2115593]

Workaround:Repeat the move or copy operation.
