Earlier this year we learned that AMD was exploring the possibility of extending support for Ryzen 5000-series processors to 300-series motherboards, which is exciting news for those still using B350 or X370 motherboards, Especially high-end motherboards. Preliminary support for Ryzen 5000 processors on 300 series motherboards started appearing earlier this year but surprisingly only for budget A320 motherboards which most of you won't be buying because honestly they're all Very rubbish.
Since then, support has been sketchy, with some B350 and X370 motherboards supporting Ryzen 5000 processors, but performance isn't always as good as it should be. After seeking information from AMD about a month ago, we were told to sit and wait for AGESA 1.2.0.7, which is expected to be released on all AM4 motherboards and, more importantly, will add support. Available from Ryzen 5000 series to B350 and X370. boards, including the 5800X3D.
Ultimately it's up to motherboard manufacturers to offer these updates for their various AM4 products, but it looks like everyone is ready, and we have models from MSI, ASUS, and Gigabyte to prove they have public access to AGESA 1.2.0.7. To update each board we installed the Ryzen 5 1600 as the original BIOS on the old B350 and X370 boards recognized this CPU, then updated to the latest BIOS, removed the R5 1600 and installed the 5800X3D. This is easy on MSI and Gigabyte motherboards, I just started with the latest BIOS compatible with microcode 1.2.0.7, but for Asus it was necessary to install several previous BIOS revisions before the motherboard accepted the latest microcode . MSI B350 Tomahawk [B350]
One of the B350 boards I kept for further testing was the MSI B350 Tomahawk as it is one of the better B350 boards. While it's only around $100 in 2017, it's still a very useful product, and it would be a shame to retire it due to BIOS compatibility. It easily handles 8-core/16-thread Ryzen 7 components and even avoids the throttling of the 16-core 3950X, especially if you provide some airflow to the VRM cooler. You really don't have much to lose compared to modern AMD B550 and Intel B660 budget boards. Sure, it's only PCIe 3.0, but it's still good for gaming, and most gamers will be happy with USB 3.1 Gen 1 support, and there's even Type-C, and the I/O panel has a total of 6 USB ports. There's only one M.2 slot, but that's probably fine for gamers, so we'll be interested to see how the 5800X3D handles that.
Juegos ASUS ROG Strix B350-F [B350]
The Asus ROG Strix B350-F Gaming is one of the more expensive B350 motherboards, and we believe it will set you back around $120. It's a great board, the VRM probably isn't much more powerful than what's on the MSI B350 Tomahawk, and even then you only have one M.2 slot, but the board does have a solid audio solution and more USB ports . . it's still a very useful board in 2022, and it's sure to get a new lease of life with Ryzen 5000 series support.
ASUS Prime X370-Pro [X370]
As for the X370 motherboard, we have the Asus Prime X370-Pro, which sells for about $160 in 2017. There's only one M.2 slot, but you get front-panel USB 3.1 Type-C, 8 USB ports (they're all USB 3.0 or 3.1), decent audio, and plenty of PCIe expansion on the panel I/O, so you Additional M.2 storage can be installed on all these boards using PCIe cards.
ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero [X370]
Then we have the Asus ROG Crosshair VI Hero, and I can tell you that if I bought it in 2017, I wanted to use it for as long as possible. The board is priced at $255, making it one of the more expensive first-generation AM4 boards. Honestly, it's not a motherboard I'd recommend, but if you're buying it, it's probably doing just fine considering you'll be able to pair it with a Ryzen 5000-series processor five years from now. This is a piece with 10 USB 3.0 ports or better. There are a total of 14 USB ports on the I/O panel with 4 additional USB 2.0 ports. It also includes BIOS flashback, high-quality audio and many other extras.
GIGABYTE GA-AX370 5 Gaming [X370]
Finally, we have the Gigabyte GA-AX370 Gaming 5 to test the latest AGESA microcode, another high-end X370 motherboard that retails for around $175. The price is more reasonable compared to the Crosshair, which makes it a popular choice for Ryzen users. It's also another well-stocked X370 board with 10 USB I/O ports, dual Gigabit LAN, probably the best onboard audio of any AM4 board at the time, dual BIOS support, and more.

These are all the B350 and X370 motherboards we have available for testing and comparison, we also updated the MSI B450 Tomahawk Max, MSI MPG X570S Carbon Max WiFi and Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Extreme, all with the latest AGESA 1.2. 0.7 microcode, which brings improved system stability in the case of those newer motherboards that are already compatible with the 5000 series.
For testing we used the 5800X3D, although the results are portable across all Ryzen 5000 series processors, so if there is no performance difference between the B350 and X570, say the 5800X3D, then the Ryzen 5. 5600 as well. For memory, we installed four DDR4-3200 modules per board in a dual-channel, dual-rank CL14 configuration and used a SAM-enabled Radeon RX 6900 XT.

Starting with multi-core Cinebench, we see that the CPU performance of the B350, B450, X370 and X570 motherboards is nearly identical. Looking at the average of the 3 series, the Gigabyte Gaming 5 has the lowest score and the Asus Crosshair the highest, and we see a 5% difference in performance between them. We didn't see any noticeable performance differences between the B350, X370 and X570 boards, aside from the Gigabyte boards, which is very good.
The same goes for single-threaded performance, where the Gigabyte Gaming 5 fared better, albeit with the lowest score. We've also seen the MSI B350 Tomahawk match newer X570 motherboards without issue.
For a real-world application test, we ran the Adobe Photoshop 2022 benchmark and found that all panels produced roughly the same score. The X570 model is always "a few points ahead", but we're talking a negligible 1% margin.
The 5800X3D is a beast in the Factorio benchmarks, and here we see the X370 and B350 motherboards delivering the same stellar performance as the latest flagship X570 model. The Gigabyte Gaming 5 was a bit behind, this time around 8% behind the Asus X370 motherboard, so I'd say Gigabyte needs to do some optimization work here. But the 5800X3D ran smoothly, so overall it's an amazing result on a 5 year old motherboard.
Now for some FPS benchmarks, we'll start with Rainbow Six Extraction. It is worth noting that after an average of 3 runs, we found a performance difference of 4% between the MSI and ASUS X570 motherboards, with the ASUS performing the best. However, most 300-series motherboards are compatible with the MSI X570S Carbon Max WiFi. Interestingly, the Gigabyte Gaming 5 is slightly faster and basically on par with the Asus ROG Crossfire VIII Extreme, so it contrasts with the results in the Factorio benchmark.
We also fired up Death Stranding, which has a very limited GPU, which is interesting because all tested boards offered the exact same performance. The fact that 300 series boards are limited to PCIe 3.0 is not an issue for this title, although worst case we don't expect more than ~5% success.
Watch Dogs performance: Legion was similar no matter the motherboard used, with a max headroom of 4% on AM4 motherboards.
Finally there is Horizon Zero Dawn, a game we found earlier to be slightly sensitive to PCIe bandwidth, which might explain why the 300 series boards were a bit slower, even though the B450 Tomahawk board is also a PCIe board 3.0. It is slightly faster than the 300 series models. Either way, the difference between the slowest and fastest AM4 boards here is at most 5%.

Almost all AMD 300-series motherboards should now support Ryzen 5000-series processors, and while it's nice to see budget B350 models taking full advantage of the 5800X3D, the real value lies in combining these older motherboards with the cheaper and more available Ryzen. .5 5600 and Ryzen 5 5700X. Basically, if you still have a B350 or X370 motherboard with a Zen or even a Zen+ processor, you can just swap it out for a 5600 for $175 because it will improve your CPU-intensive games by leaps and bounds. Ryzen GPU scaling shows an average performance increase of 60% for CPU-bound games, with a maximum gain of over 100%.
As a side note, Ryzen 5 1600 processors typically sell for $60-$80 on eBay, which means you can upgrade to a Ryzen 5 5600 for about $100 in trade-in fees, and Ryzen 7 1700 owners will do better. It's clear at this point that for those still using 300-series motherboards, there's no better option. AMD should be commended for breathing new life into these older motherboards, and while we think it's in their best interest to do so, it's still a huge win for consumers. It's also good to see how mature the AM4 platform is. All of these B350 and X370 motherboards run smoothly with the new microcode, all support four DDR4-3200 variants, and run XMP just fine. Not only that, but AMD's new Smart Access Memory technology works just as well. There appears to be a bug with the Radeon drivers as they fail to detect the availability of SAM on 300 series motherboards and instead report the feature as unavailable. However, it is possible to enable it at the BIOS level and still get the expected performance improvement, so despite what the Radeon Adrenaline driver says, it still works.
In short, the 300-series boards also appear to have improved memory support for Ryzen 5000 processors, the ability to use SAM to boost performance, and most importantly, largely mirror the performance of X570 boards. young. A follow-up to last week's "Why Ryzen Is Awesome and the Haters Are Wrong", this review demonstrates just how awesome the AM4 platform really is. During Computex 2022, AMD announced its commitment to AM4 for at least the next few years, so you can expect the platform to improve beyond 2022.
